The Bay Hill Club and Lodge is a private facility rests upon 270 acres of rolling hills in Bay Hill, Florida.
Before becoming known as Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge, it was created by a group of investors from Nashville who just intended for it to be a private getaway where they could enjoy a good game of golf every now and then. It has a total of 27 holes; the original 18 holes were opened in 1961, designed by Dick Wilson and built by Bob Simmons. After Wilson’s passing Simmons designed and built an extra nine holes. The 27 holes are split into three 9 hole courses; Dick Wilson’s 18 are split into the Challenger and Champion courses while Simmons’ 9 holes make up the Charger course.

history of the course
In 1965 Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Don Cherry and Dave Ragan played an exhibition match that the owners had arranged to promote the place. After Palmer beat Nicklaus’ 72 with a score of just 66 he fell completely in love with it. Palmer and his partners went on to buy the whole place in 1976. From then on it continues to be the Palmer family’s winter home.
For more than 20 years Bay Hill has hosted the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard on the first 18 holes. The invitational is one of the annual premiere events of the PGA Tour and has created quite a name for itself since its inaugural match of 1979. Today the course has an overwhelming air of golf champions. As you walk down the foyer you’ll see an array of pictures on the Wall of Champions and the sense of excitement only grows as you walk out onto the course.

The signature 17th of the tournament course (the 8th hole on the Champion course) can demonstrate the best of what you’ll see at Bay Hill. You start out on an elevated tee, and your heart will stop. There’s a forced carry over a large water hazard, followed by a medium sized green that is almost completely surrounded partly by the long bunker that covers two thirds of the front of it and others placed on the left side and the back.
Bay Hill has many lakes, trees and a variation of elevated and shallow terrain. Precision is key on this one. It has been named the 15th in the Top 100 Golf Courses You Can Play in the US by Golf Magazine, who also named it the 2nd of Silver Medal Resorts. Golf Digest had it as the 97th of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, and even the number one Best Course in Florida by Florida Golf News.
