The Blue Monster is a brilliant championship golf course located at, what is now known as, Trump National Doral Miami resort and spa in Doral, Florida. It was originally owned by Alfred Kaskel, pioneer of real estate, who founded it in 1962. At that time this property was known as the Doral Country Club and the Doral Resort & Spa. The unusual name was derived from adjoining the first parts of both Kaskel’s and his wife’s first names. Thus Doris and Alfred became Doral.

history of the course
Getting back to the star course of the resort, the Blue Monster is a par 72 Dick Wilson design that hosted the PGA Tour from the very year it was opened in 1962 to 2006. Since 2007 the WGC-Cadillac Championship has returned annually and made this course its home. In 2011, the Trump Organization bought over the whole property for a reported $150 million. Come spring of 2013 well recognized golf course architect Gil Hanse began remodeling the entire course which was finally reopened to the public in December of 2014.

The original Wilson design was famous for its many water hazards, elevated putting surfaces and greens that slanted 30 to 45 degrees directly down into hazard. His most celebrated hole was and is the Blue Monster’s par 4 18th.
In order to really shine on this hole and come out on top, two absolutely spot on shots are necessary. From the tee you have to steer clear of bunkers and trees on the right and water on the left. Once you manage that you have to carry well over a large body of water and onto one of those famous sloping greens, accuracy is key so you don’t have your ball rolling off toward the hazards. There’s a reason that this hole has the long held title of being one of the toughest holes of the entire PGA tour.
The work of Gil Hanse left this course significantly longer, and tougher. He restored it to its former glory but definitely added numerous personal touches. The bunkers are more easily spotted making it more dramatic for the player as he plans his approach, the fairways a little more smooth and has more flow, but all in all the course is definitely more challenging.
